SLINKY

Simple, colorful, graphic. I shot this for a accounting firm's brochure. It was shot on 4x5 color transparencies and I was paid $500. After two years of usage I was able to list the image with a stock agency. The very first sale as a stock image was for $1500 of which I received $750. It has sold many times over the years. You hear it so often, but owning the copyright to your images is so important for your future.

VALUE of a PHOTOGRAPH
As a photographer we wonder if there will be a value to our images in the future. We click away because the scene before us is beautiful and we want to record the moment. The importance of that moment may not reveal itself until the future. So we shoot and archive.

DONKEYS

Sometimes as you drive along from place to place, a image presents itself that you have to turn around and go back for. This is one of those images. I was not sure they were real when I passed them, but this scene is exactly what I saw.

PRODUCTION STILL

I assisted Bill Parsons when I got out of photography school and this is a fun photo from a Hot Tub shoot we did in a empty warehouse. That is me, production coordinator Sandy Hubbard and art director Larry Stone.

It was a three day shoot and the last tub we left up for the night and came back late to soak, eat pizza and drink.

KENNETH STARR

During the President Bill Clinton campaign I was able to shoot lots of jobs for magazines from all over the world. One night a got a call from Time magazine about shooting Kenneth Starr the next morning at 8:00am. It was his only time available. All Time magazine said was they wanted for him to look mad. I said yes and when I got to his office the next morning his assistants showed me into a board room with nothing on the walls and only a table in the middle. Mr. Starr came in and I proceeded to photograph him leaning up against the wall and whatever else I could think of. I asked him to look mad and he said no, he had nothing to be mad about. When I ran out of film and started to reload, one of his aides came in and gave him a newspaper with a unpleasant article about him. He was leaning over the table reading the story when he looked up at a the aide and was mad. He said something to the aide and I knew that was the look I needed. I got one camera loaded and while loading the second, I prefocused on him. Then I quickly asked him to look up at me and bam, shot this photo. He stood up, said to me, you got me didn't you. I said yes sir I did. I ended up shooting about four rolls of film but the rest was junk. There was never any doubt which photo to use. Time ran it as a full page and a half lead to the story.

I have always wondered what to do with my blog. How much to post? What to post? How much to write? The last couple of years I have been getting old slides scanned at www.scancafe.com and recently received 786 slides back. Lots of these scans were of personal photos and the idea struck me to post images from past trips, of friends and fun photos from my past. I have worked with great people in my career ,so far, and have great friends so I hope to embarrass myself more than them.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVENTH

Now that I have said all of that, I am going to start with an image that is not a scan but is a great place to start. When I first went into business, with hair and glasses, I had the great fortune to get an office on the 7th floor of the Boyle Building. Everyone on the floor was working in a creative field and we all fed off of each other. The only person that was not in a creative field was #6 and he owned the building. It was a wonderful way to begin. One day we got the wild idea of pitching in our money and buying ad space on the back of Arkansas Times magazine. This was what we came up with. We shot it in our little studio. It is framed and hanging in my office.

Sprint Cup Racing on Sunday in Michigan

Sunday finally arrived. It was great to work with a team of professional photographers and to cover the race. I feel my shooting was ok but missed forcing my way into some better shots.

I have been asked what is next for me after the Razorbacks and although I am sure I will be shooting some Razorback sports I contacted Getty Images about shooting more for them and they asked if I was interested in shooting some Nascar. It has been twelve years since I shot a race but Michigan here we are.

After 10 years of being a photographer for the Arkansas Razorbacks, I have decided to move on. Strictly a business decision. No hard feelings. The needs of the Media Relations Dept have changed over the years and my needs for the future are different today. I just want to thank everyone that I have worked with over the years and to let everyone know how hard all of the people work to bring us Razorback Sports. What goes on behind the scenes to put on a event is unbelievable. Working with everyone at the University and being able to see the student athletes go through their four years of college has been my reward.

SEC Outdoor Track Champions

It is always great to share in a Conference Championship with a great bunch of kids. Arkansas won it's 93 Conference Championship at the Univ of Florida and it came down to the last few races to decide who would win. Our guys stepped up big time. In seven years of shooting for the Razorbacks I have met a few of athletes that mean more to me because of not only what they accomplish on the playing field/track but because of who they are as people. Nkosinza Balumbu and Scott MacPherson are two of these athletes. They are great students, great athletes and great pros. They do whatever is asked of them on the field and off. I would name their accomplishments but it would take up to much space. It is one of my favorite photos and my honor to be in a photo with them.

The one thing I miss the most about being busier and older is that I do not have the chance for road trips. Road trips to relax and shoot stock. I drive way to much, but only to get from point A to point B. Taking your time and looking around for interesting sights. Stopping and watching. Meeting people.

I covered the SEC Tennis Championships the last four days and although the Razorbacks were put out in the first round it was fun to shoot. The Ole Miss Rebels beat the Florida Gators in the finals.

I have been going through old CD's and DVD's of past images. These were shot with a Pentax 6x7 on FUJI slide film and
scanned to a 250mg file. I wish I had more and I wish I shot more of this.

Stock Work

I have been trying to shoot more stock and with Sara helping me by handling the Photoshop and Metadata
work we are getting more done and faster. The windmills were shot in Kansas at a Wind Farm off of I-70
outside of Salina and my guy model is Steven that works with my wife. I have become convinced as I get
older that I do not have to know. Just an idea is enough. Start with a idea and keep shooting. Things seem
to fall into place as you shoot and stay open to what is working in the camera. The scooter was the idea,
and coming down the street just looked cool. The hat and guitar were the ideas, the swing and the light
were just there. Isn't digital wonderful.

Canon Mark III

I received my Canon Mark III's back from Canon on Thursday and shot a NFL game on Sunday. Much better results.
The focus issue seemed to be gone and although I cannot explain the effect, there used to be some kind of ghosting
image or weird effect going on in the photos that is also gone. Finally, one less thing to worry about.
